Bio

Meredith A. Ortiz Rivera is a senior at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. She is a Medical Microbiology major and Business Administration minor pursuing a PhD track. She previously participated in computer mathematics and archaeology research at the UPR Arecibo campus. She participated in summer research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the Institute of RNA Innovation (Dr. Drew Weissman Laboratory) at Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. On campus, she is the Medical Microbiology Emphasis Area Officer of the Arecibo Microbiology Students Chapter (CEMA) and a research student for Professor Acevedo in genetic research focused on the lactose gene. She was introduced to the field of Toxicology in her second year after being nominated to the SOT conference. Through the ToxMSDT program, she is looking for the opportunity to expand her knowledge in the field, understand the differing roles of a toxicologist, and discover how to combine these fields with others in the sciences.
